enter - welcome to the National Trust
At the National Trust things are changing. Fast. We're building a digital presence which is nothing short of pioneering for our sector. We're making unprecedented investments - in energy, time and resources (with a multi-million pound budget over a 5 year period and a growing online team of around 25 people - your people). So we're looking for the best: an inspirational leader who can, with the support of our whole organisation, guide their expert team to put us at the cutting edge of digital development. The video above should give you an insight into what it is like to work with our digital team, but the website should help fill in any blanks. Welcome to a new beginning.
evolution - learn more about our digital vision
"We're really excited about the future. We will be looking to support our vision to develop multiple applications and websites in a flexible and agile way. This will help us respond quickly to the ever-changing digital world and empower our people at a central and local level. By providing useful, personal and social functionality we hope to build deeper relationships between National Trust and its supporters." Nick Burne, Acting Head of Digital Media.
We're Europe's biggest conservation organisation, looking after special places across the land. We've recently started a journey to bring an exciting and ambitious new digital vision to life. First and foremost we've refreshed our brand - more about that throughout this site. Over the next 5 years, our e-engagement programme, which will transform our online presence, will help millions of people understand what we do, enjoy every experience they have with us and, most importantly, get involved - through interactivity and participation on our websites, as well as in person when visiting our many spectacular and special places.
No small task, this programme looks to embrace our existing members (all 3.6 million of them) and reach out to new audiences, while generating crucial revenue (through membership, e-commerce and fundraising activity). In the ever-changing digital world, we're looking to be agile, flexible and hungry for change, benchmarking ourselves commercially and blazing a trail in our sector.
The best thing about it? The full backing of our board of Trustees and senior management team, who will support you 100% of the way as you apply nothing short of strategic brilliance, to guide us through this evolutionary time. Never before has there been such energy and excitement behind the endless potential of the digital world, which makes it the perfect time - and place - for an experienced, charismatic leader to join us and make the most of all this potential.
experiment - take a look through some of our most recent work
How do you find the perfect digital solution? By asking those who will use it, listening to them and then doing something about it by empowering and inspiring those who know how. We believe ideas can and do come from anywhere and anyone. We are user-led and usability focussed. We want to keep things simple, engaging and easy to use. We encourage every member of our digital team to let their creative juices flow and play with new ideas. As part of our brand re-fresh exercise we're pushing a few boundaries. This isn't National Trust as you'd probably expect it. We're changing our tone of voice and positioning to make sure we're warmer and more inviting to all our members and visitors, and introducing great new features on our site to encourage them to get more involved with us.
We thought we'd give you a sneak preview of the very latest goings-on in our talented digital team. It's work in progress, but feel free to have a look around at what we're up to.

expertise - find out what we're looking for
Here's a summary of the job and who we're looking for, so you can get a flavour for it at a glance.
About the role
Quite simply, you'll be our ambassador for digital innovation, nurturing a culture of empowerment and creative thinking in this high profile role. Building and managing relationships up to board level, you will give particular focus to bringing out the best in your multi-disciplined, multi-talented team of digital experts, whilst understanding the wider impact of the changes you implement.
You will plot a clear direction for us across the broad and ever-changing digital landscape, whilst understanding the detail of delivery in real terms. Most importantly, you'll harness our considerable energy and enthusiasm for this programme, winning hearts and minds across your 25-strong team (of senior managers, marketers, designers, developers, content producers and project managers) and, of course, an evolving, expanding visitor audience throughout the world.
About you
A bold, yet consultative and diplomatic leader, you understand, above all, how to apply a lightness of touch which allows strong talent to shine, whilst driving progress and transforming new ideas into workable and practical realities. With an impressive and varied record in senior management gained within a large and complex organisation (client-side), you'll be passionate about the potential of digital media. Your strong people and change management skills will of course go hand in hand with insight into how we can maximise digital marketing potential.
From a solid marketing background, with a thorough understanding of digital channels including revenue generation possibilities, you'll be well versed in e-commerce, user generated content, social media and mobile as well as new and emerging technology platforms and frameworks. Above all though, you'll always have an eye on the future and people in mind: the people on your team and, of course, the end-user who, thanks to you and your team, will have an unforgettable experience every time they visit.

explore - more about our great working environment at Heelis
Heelis, our stunning award winning central office (where you'd be based), is more than just a building. From the very beginning, this development was set to embrace our philosophy of putting people and places at the heart of all we do. This award-winning structure maximises day-light (a control system adjusts levels of artificial light in response to external conditions), solar power (1,554 panels on the South facing roof) and natural ventilation to be efficient, sustainable and economical. Even the carpet was responsibly sourced, using wool from Herdwick sheep grazed on National Trust farmland. Heelis is expected to generate just 15kg of Carbon Dioxide per square metre a year, compared to 169kg for a typical office. Contemporary, yet comfortable. Futuristic, yet friendly, Heelis, with its open-plan spaces, art on the walls and state-of-the-art technology, is an environment in which it's a pleasure to work.
Perfectly located for an easy commute, Heelis is situated in North Wiltshire, close to junction 16 of the M4, within comfortable reach of London, Bristol and Cheltenham , by car or train. And if it's more rural living you crave, you'll be spoilt for choice, since some of the most beautiful countryside and picture-postcard villages surround us, including the Cotswolds.
